Hell Let Loose Vietnam Helicopters: Controls & How to Fly
Helicopters are the signature addition of the Vietnam standalone — and the single most argued-about system of launch week. This guide covers what is confirmed about flying, crewing and countering them. Verified against the launch build where possible; balance details change with patches (last checked August 14, 2026).
Who gets helicopters
Air power is asymmetric by design: US forces field transport helicopters (the UH-1 “Huey” family shown throughout official trailers), reflecting the era’s air-cavalry doctrine. The NVA/VC answer is not symmetrical aircraft but AA weapons, terrain and the tunnel network — the factions page covers this asymmetry in full: US vs NVA/VC.
Flight controls: before you take off
- Helicopter controls are bound separately from infantry keys — open Settings → Keybinds → vehicle section before your first flight, especially with the launch build’s keybind persistence bug in play.
- Collective (altitude), cyclic (pitch/roll) and tail rotor (yaw) are distinct inputs. Practice lifting to a hover before promising a squad transport.
- There is no arcade auto-hover: throttle discipline is the skill floor, and hard landings damage the airframe.
The transport loop
The Huey’s job in a coordinated team:
- Load infantry at base or a rear point.
- Fly low along treelines to mask the approach (flying high over open paddies is how crews die).
- Flare, touch down or low-hover at the LZ just long enough to unload.
- Return for reinforcements or hot-extract a cut-off squad.
A good pilot compresses the map for their team — the “how to spawn helicopter” search has a real answer: airframes spawn at the base helipad on a timer, they are a shared team resource, and wasting one solo is the fastest way to get squad-kicked.
Countering helicopters
Launch-week complaints about helicopter dominance are as much about disorganised defence as raw balance:
- Massed small-arms fire from a whole squad damages low flyers — call the vector on voice.
- Dedicated AA weapons and mounted guns punish predictable approach paths.
- LZs are ambush magnets: mining or overwatching a used LZ farms repeat landings.
Expression Games has flagged helicopter balance in launch communications; expect tuning. Patch notes land on the updates page.
Other vehicles
Ground armour and the era’s patrol boats have their own page: vehicles & boats.
