Hell Let Loose Vietnam Factions: US vs NVA & Viet Cong
Vietnam breaks the series’ mirror-match tradition: US forces and the NVA/VC play by different rules, and matches are decided by how well each side leans into its own doctrine. Last updated: August 14, 2026.
US forces: firepower and mobility
- Air cavalry — transport helicopters compress the map for insertions and extractions (helicopter guide).
- Firepower — the era’s US arsenal (M14, M16-family, M60-class support weapons) and armour advantage on open ground.
- The cost — US power projects from bases and LZs; both are targetable, and a US team that stops moving loses its advantage.
NVA / Viet Cong: terrain and patience
- Tunnel networks — underground spawn infrastructure that repopulates “cleared” ground (tunnel guide).
- Ambush doctrine — jungle sightlines are made for prepared kills on predictable routes: LZs, roads and river banks.
- Numbers where it counts — NVA armour and boat presence on specific maps, VC irregular kit and captured weapons filling the gaps.
How the asymmetry decides matches
- US wins tempo, NVA/VC wins attrition. A US team using helicopters aggressively dictates where fights happen; a communist team that survives the first push bleeds the attackers on ground of its choosing.
- Infrastructure war — US garrisons/LZs vs NVA tunnels: both sides win by killing the other’s spawn logistics, but they hunt different objects.
- The counter-meta is discipline — massed AA fire beats helicopters, tunnel sweeps beat underground spawns; launch-week complaints on both fronts trace back to disorganised teams (review context).
Which faction should you learn first?
Play both, but start US infantry — the role kit is more conventional and the beginner path is smoother (roles guide); learn NVA/VC once you can read jungle sightlines.
